New Craftsmen Added This Season
Each year we select the best American crafts we can find. We search the country and choose items for their quality, function, style and value. We are always delighted to meet new craftsmen and enjoy representing them in our shops. We pay careful attention to details and represent the artist to our customers, providing information about the work to the customer. Shopping with us is a chance to find a unique item that is American made and has an artist and a story behind it. This year we have found many new artists from North Carolina, keeping our items as local as we can. We have also focused and being a greener company and supporting craftsmen who use recycled pieces in their work. It is amazing what people can reuse. Our History
Tar Heel Trading Company was established in 1979 by Mary Ames. The goal was to bring fine craft to the Outer Banks coast, a tourist destination which at the time was relatively remote and lacked such offerings. Our name came from the fact that the shop would feature North Carolina crafts from what is known as the Tarheel state. The first location was at Sea Holly Square in Kill Devil Hills and featured the work of predominately North Carolina craftsmen. During the past 30 years, the company has had to leave the original location when it was replaced by condos and has had locations in several towns on the Outer Banks and in Key West, Florida. We currently have two locations on the Outer Banks and the number of craftsmen represented has grown to more than 200 from across the US. When Mary retired in 1999, she sold the business to Judy Joyce who worked closely with Mary since 1985 in managing the company. Judy, her family and loyal staff have operated the business for the past 11 years with the same careful attention to detail, quality and customer service that has set Tar Heel Trading Company apart since its inception.
